Grade 6

Area & Perimeter Introduction
This activity may work well as a way to figure out what students may know already about area and perimeter while using a fun manipulative they may not have used yet.
Perimeter of Polygons
Students measure pre-cut polygons, trace and label shapes, and record a plan, calculation, and find answer for perimeter. Discussion includes ways to formalize, generalize, and make the process efficient.
Perimeter of Polygons II
Students continue to measure polygons and formalize their perimeter calculations. This time using Power Polygons whose side measures may include partial centimeters.
Introducing Volume
This activity invites students to use 1 cm cubes to find the volume of wooden rectangular prisms. By recreating the solids, students should gain awareness of what volume means and discover the formula on their own!
Volume
In this activity students create, sketch, and label rectangular prisms with the same volume. With the use of concrete materials, some of the big ideas for volume (formula, use of cubic units) become solid.
