Cube Net Investigation
Students work together to find all possible cube nets. Use polydron pieces or Polypad or both! Record ideas on square dot paper.
A nice way to kick off the measurement unit.
Surface Area of Rectangular Prisms
This is a slide deck I use to build from the cube investigation above into sketching nets of cubes and other rectangular prisms and finding the surface area.
Triangular Prisms
In this activity, students choose between 3 given triangular prisms and construct their object and find the surface area.
Mild, Medium, and Spicy options to ensure the appropriate level of challenge.
Sketch the Object
Worried that students might be blindly plugging numbers into a formula without really knowing what they are doing? Do a switch-a-ma-roo!
Give them a formula and see what object they draw.
Row Game – Volume
Each row has two problems.
Both problems have the same answer.
Work with a partner and support each other to complete.
Two Truths & A Lie Measurement Edition
Set up the 10 prompts around your space. Students must read the three given statements, figure out which one is the lie, and provide convincing proof of their choice. Questions on nets, surface area, and volume of prisms and cylinders.
Mystery Object
With clues about faces, surface area, and volume, students must figure out the mystery object and it’s dimensions.
Includes 6 riddles which could be set up as stations for students to visit.
