Unit 2: The Cartesian Plane & Adding and Subtracting Integers

Geometry Warm-ups

A variety of prompts to use as a whole class discussion.
These could kick-start or consolidate your class.
In no particular order – come back often, I keep adding more!

Coordinate Sort

In this activity, students are asked to sort coordinates into groups. In doing so, students recognize that the coordinates in a quadrant all have something in common. Introduce the idea of quadrants while still getting in some plotting practice.
Since students are asked to connect points in quadrants to create a polygon, it is super easy to confirm accuracy.

Geo Quick Checks

Exit / entrance slips to assess student achievement along the way. Check back often – I am always adding more.

Plotting Points Interview

Materials that could be useful in conducting an interview with students to confirm their knowledge about the Cartesian Plane and plotting points.

Representing Integers

This is a whole class activity that can be used as an observational assessment prior to operating with integers. Students have cards with integers on them and must display the ones that match a given prompt.

Class Notes Integers

A file with printable pages containing examples for representing integers and adding and subtracting with number lines and counters.
These can be used to support teachers, students, tutors, parents, and all engaged in the learning process.

Scavenger Hunt

Students choose the level of challenge they prefer and complete nine problems by finding the posted matching solution.

This one involves the use of number lines and counters.

Tic Tac Toe

A three by three grid of integer problems are given using one of three representations. (Pictorial, Symbolic, Contextual). Students choose a row or a column to complete. They must interpret the problem given and give the other two representations to match.

Mystery Number

This activity has students finding the mystery number using given clues. One riddle to complete as an example, then 5 more. All 5 are then combined for the final answer.
